Church of St. George-Cairo

Overview

The Church and Monastery of St. George is a Christian complex of the Alexandrian Orthodox Church in Coptic Cairo (part of Old Cairo), traces its history back to 1165.
On the territory of the monastery of St. George there is the Church of St. George and the residence of the Patriarch of Alexandria. There is also a convent of St. George of the Coptic Church nearby.

By the beginning of the 20th century, the Greeks had already left Egypt in large numbers. In 1904, a fire seriously damaged the complex and the temple was rebuilt, but most of the inhabitants left the monastery.

The complex is located on the site of the old Trajan Fort. Next to the church is a building that houses the Museum of the Orthodox Alexandrian Patriarchate, which contains a collection of icons and church utensils. The nilomer is located in the center of the church itself. Under the church, on the first floor of the bastion, there are chapels and the tomb of the Patriarchs of Alexandria, but the entrance is closed to outsiders. It is interesting that although the Church of St. George is Greek, its dome is crowned with a Coptic cross.

A chapel is attached to the temple. It is believed that it was built on the site of the grotto where the Holy Family hid during the Flight to Egypt. On the territory of the complex there is a cemetery with Greek and Coptic areas, in the middle of which the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built, which is used only for funeral services.

The Coptic nunnery was first mentioned in the 10th century, the very first records of a Greek monastery date back to the 15th century. In the 1550s. Russian traveler Vasily Poznyakov described the monastery and the temple: “And in Old Egypt there is a large church, the Holy Passion-bearer George, a monastery for girls; and in the church on the left country ... the image of St. George the Passion-Bearer is painted, behind a copper grid. Many miracles and healings come from that image. "

On April 12, 2010, His Beatitude Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa Theodore II and His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia arrived in Cairo, where they visited the monastery of St. George, after which they held a joint service in the church.
