The Alexandria Opera House is very popular for both the local public and the visiting tourists.
The Alexandria Opera House is located in a luxurious building in the center of the city in:
(22 El-Horreya Road), Alexandria (Egypt).

Today, Alexandria Opera is actually a part of Cairo Opera, at least organizationally.

History and present of theater

The Alexandria Opera House was built in 1918 during the reign of Sultan Fuad the First. The first name given to the stage was Ali Muhammad Theater.
The original owner of the foundation was Badr al-Din Kurdani, who appointed French architect Georges Baroque to design the building.
After the grand opening of the theater in 1921, it hosted famous Arab artists as well as artists from abroad.

The name

In 1962, after the July 23 revolution, the name of the theater was changed to Sayed Darwish Theater in honor of one of the most important founders of Egyptian national music and the composer of the Egyptian anthem. The name of Sayed Darwish was also chosen because he was born in Alexandria Governorate, and since then, this name has remained the second official name which the Alexandria Opera is known by in our time.

Development

Over time, the opera house grew and required major investments to restore its former appeal and functions, but all previous attempts to renovate the building did more harm than good.

Finally, in the year 2000, the abandoned building was included in the Egyptian Heritage List, which marked the beginning of development and restoration work began. After several years of hard and meticulous work of rebuilding the house, it has been restored to its original beauty with all of its wonderful decor elements. So, in 2004, President Hosni Mubarak and his wife participated in the reopening of the Sayed Darwish Theater.

Today, the Alexandria Opera House is structurally governed by Cairo Opera - on its stage there are events, shows and concerts organized by Cairo opera groups such as opera, ballet, symphony and opera, and there are many other groups, including orchestras, local and Arab orchestras, modern dance theater, etc.
